In the paper below, I will support L. W. Sumner’s view that the public needs to have a moderate view on the dividing issue of abortion. Summer indicates that the issue of abortion has extremes that are highlighted by liberals and conservatives. Debate on abortion mainly arises from the moral aspect. I, however, agree with Sumner that the constellation of the moral issues concerning human reproduction and development is dark and mysterious. It is, therefore, impossible to establish a common ground that addresses the diverse issues relating to abortion. I agree with Sumner on establishing a moderate view. A moderate view on abortion allows the opposing parties to compromise on their stand but reach an agreement that is reasonable and morally acceptable. I agree with Sumner’s view that a fetus acquires moral standing at least from the second semester; thus abortion can be permitted only in the first semester. From the second semester, the fetus has formed most of its features, and thus the decision to terminate can only be made on medical grounds. Abortion on medical grounds is what Sumner refers as therapeutic grounds. ...
... If the mother’s life, (as the giver and support of the life of the unborn child) is in danger due to the pregnancy, then abortion can be permitted. I agree with Sumner that abortion must not be permitted based on socioeconomic and humanitarian grounds. There are alternatives such as adoption that mothers who do not want to keep their children can turn to. Socioeconomic factors and abortion on humanitarian grounds should not be allowed. Sumner provides an agreeable perspective that brings together the divided opinion of the liberals and conservatives.
