There are many different kinds of espresso machines out there and so the one you should go for, if you are really into espresso that is should depend on a few things. Before we get into those things, we should also point out to you that owning a high quality grinder is probably more important than owning a top quality Italian Espresso Machine. This is because you can make top quality espresso with a good grinder and a cheap espresso machine, but you really can't make good espresso with a bad grind and a high quality espresso machine. There are three main types of machine that makes espresso; automatic, semi-automatic and manual.

Explaining the types of Espresso Machine:

Manual Espresso Machines:

Manual machines are the hardest to work but they are capable of making the best world-class espresso. Finally you have the fully manual machines. These are the old style, decorative espresso machines. These really can make the best espresso in the world. However it will take practice to get good! You will need to grind your own beans, fill your porter filter, tamp the grounds ...
... and finally pull a lever that will determine the quality of your espresso. There are many variables such as lever pull speed and power that can determine the quality of your beverage and your grind will also have to be spot on.

Automatic Espresso Machines:

The automatic machines are the ones where you simply press one button and the espresso is made for you. These tend to be the most expensive but are the easiest to use. They also tend to be the fastest! If you are in a hurry in the morning then a one button espresso will be what you will need.

Semi-Automatic Espressos:

Semi-automatic machines come in many different varieties. You have the capsule or pod semi-automatic style machine where you buy the pods from the supermarket and place them in the machine. These are great but the result is not always very fresh since the grounds have been in the capsule for months very often. However these machines are easy, fun and clean. Then you have the semi-automatic machines where you grind your own beans and then fill up a porter filter with the grounds. These machines make fantastic results. However they are time-consuming and messy.

Espresso Grinder:

An Espresso Grindercan be part of the machine that you purchase or it can be a free standing separate unit. Either way, it's important that you get the right type of grinder to ensure that you are able to use the grounds to make a real espresso. The wrong type of bean and the wrong type of grinder will only create a drink that doesn't really resemble what espresso really is. If you have only one setting, naturally you are going to have issues with getting the most appropriate grind for the espresso machine you're using.
