The start of the bike dates back to the 20th century where it was not as famous as it is presently. It had started its journey as a decent two-wheeler devoid of any brand name to back up. Slowly and after some experiments, in 1903 Arthur and Walter Davidson rolled out the first working bike in their own back garage. The engine force was so intense that the rider had to reverse peddle to come to a halt.



Full-fledged production was not instituted before 1907 when an individual company was formed and the company contracted for over 800 two-wheelers in a decade. They were sold over the entire US country and it was when the company started to gain fame. It reached its peak when the Detroit Police department acknowledged the vehicle and bought a number of them for public service activities. The number of police departments using the vehicle reached 2500 within a decade after the launch of the company officially.



The company grew further and multiple advancements took place, one of which was formulating the iconic V-shaped twin engine. This the part which gave the two-wheeler its unique identity. This the first time when a belt driven engine was introduced. All other vehicles were installed with chain which a number of disadvantages like snapping off from the joints after long usage, heating up of the gear box and audible irksome noise from friction after a certain time.
The history doesn’t end here and it helped profoundly in the US military. During World War I, specially designed Harley Davidson vehicles equipped with extended holder and tough tires were mass produced to help the soldiers reach the war front without any hindrance. The very first vehicle to be sold outside the US was in Germany with the name Roy Holtz.
