Hid, Revolutionizing The World Of Artificial Light
HID is an acronym for High Intensity Discharge, a phenomenon in which high amount of light is emitted by the electrical discharge of gases. This emitted light is three times more luminous than the one emitted by ordinary incandescent or halogen light. HID has revolutionized the night time driving by greatly increasing the visibility on roads at night keeping in view the fact that 60 % of road accidents at night occur only due to less visibility.
Gas Discharge Lights and HID:
Gas discharge light is generated by sending sudden and momentary electric current between two objects of different potential through Plasma i.e. and ionized gas. These lights use some noble gas like xenon, krypton, neon, argon or a mixture of these gases.
HID is also a gas discharged light in which an electric arc embedded between tungsten electrodes is placed in a transparent arc tube produces light. This arc tube contains metal salts and gas. Gas is mainly responsible for initially striking the arc, and once it is started, heating and evaporation of salts produces plasma which enhances the intensity of the light produced by the arc. ...
... It also consumes very less power.
HID Bulbs:
High Intensity Discharge Bulbs are different from halogen in basic chemistry and functioning. HID Bulbs are also much superior to halogen bulbs. They produce high intensity bright light that works efficiently in the worst driving conditions. You do not need to worry about driving in heavy fog with HID bulbs installed in your car's headlights. Filament used in halogen bulbs is not used in these bulbs. They produce light through creating an electric arc instead of using heat-oriented light emission. Consumption of power and intense bright white light emitted by HID bulbs is in no way comparable to the yellowish light of halogen bulbs. Halogen bulbs have a lifetime of about 1000 hours, while HID lamps are a lifetime solution for headlights having lifetime period more than four times that of halogen light.
Xenon:
Xenon, a noble gas is the one element, which made the high intensity discharge light phenomenon possible. It is a heavy, highly conductive and colorless gas. Xenon gets heated instantly on the passage of current and becomes highly bright. It was the addition of xenon to the mixture of noble gases present in the early HID lamps that made possible the problem of great amount of time required by other noble gases to become reactive. It lessened the reactivity time by a great degree.
Blue Headlights:
There are two types of blue headlights available for cars:
1- Genuine HID blue headlights installed in some expensive luxury cars.
2- Artificial blue color given to headlights by dying, illegal painting and coating the bulbs.
Blue headlight bulb is a quartz bulb with two electrodes in it. It comprises of an inert gas, mercury and some other earth elements. Mercury works as an igniter. Complex spectrum produced by this setting of blue headlight gives a blue white color to the lamp because of typical weakness of red color in this spectrum.
