When we mention bacteria, what comes to mind are those invisible icky creepy things that give us ailments once they come into us. Antiseptics and antibiotics are the brain's immediate reaction, conditioned as it is by endless commercial advertisements about what germs do to people. But really, there ARE good bacteria, and they reside in our bodies -in our digestive system, in fact--- to keep us healthy and well. They work by helping our intestinal juices digest the food we ingest, boost our immune system, and aid in the body's absorption of the nutrients, vitamins and minerals. There are normally about 400 strains of such bacteria in the intestines.

In many cases, however, the balance of 'good' and 'bad' bacteria in the digestive tract is upset by the ingestion of, among many, antibiotics which kills of all kinds of bacteria, good and bad; some drugs and medicines; chlorine; too much fluoride; coffee and tea; synthetic vitamins; pesticide residues in fruits or vegetables; stress; preservative chemicals or spoiled foods. This imbalance may result in diarrhea, allergy, feelings of fatigue, skin disorders, acid reflux, painful ...
... joints, colds, flu or infections and many more. Probiotic supplements can help relieve these ailments in varying degrees of effectivity, with the different brands and makes.

By restoring the balance of beneficial and 'bad' bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract, probiotic supplements also restore the normal functioning of the digestive tract to get you back on an even keel. There is even a strain of probiotic supplement that treats colic in babies. Restoration of balance is done by the probiotics through the production of lactic acid which alters the pH balance of the digestive tract to favor the 'good' bacteria. It makes the gastrointestinal environment hostile to molds, mold spores, yeasts and 'bad' bacteria, including that which putrefies the ingested food. So with probiotics it is even possible to pass 'good' wind!

The additional benefits taking probiotic supplements can give include:
1. Lowering the amount of blood cholesterol and high blood pressure
2. Enhancing the assimilation of food nutrients, particularly calcium
3. Boosting the body's immune system
4. Developing antibacterial bodies, minimize yeast infections and even cancer-suppressant compounds
5. Neutralizing toxins in the ingested food obtained pesticide residues, chemical fertilizer and food additives
6. Producing B complex vitamins (niacin, riboflavin, B12, folic acid, biotin)

Considering the system of food production today, when there is much reliance on chemicals to produce more foodstuffs and faster, and then prevent these foodstuff from being lost after harvest, it is no wonder that people are taking in so much more artificial food than ever before, including poisons. Probiotic supplements can tremendously help in maintaining health by regulating the acid-alkaline balance in the digestive tract and minimizing the toxic effects of poisonous substances.

There is just one probably harmful effect probiotic supplements have: doctors advise against it for very young and elderly patients with serious health problems. But it is still best to consult your doctor about probiotic supplements before you take one, especially when you are ill with something.
