Furniture Castors With A Modern Twist
Castors have been used on furniture for 100's of years on sofa's, beds, chairs and larger pieces of furniture. Traditionally castors were made of brass or metal, and attached via a cup over the furniture leg, or by a thread screwed into the leg. These traditional castors are still available today and one of the most well known versions of this furniture castor is a Shepherd castor.
Shepherd castors are also known as ball castors. This type of castor allows a smooth movement in all directions, and is extremely hard wearing for such a small and discreet castor. There are several sizes of Shepherd castors, with either a metal or rubber tread. Furniture designers being mindful of sensitive flooring often prefer furniture castors with rubber tyres. Fixing these furniture castors couldn't be easier, with three options of a threaded stem fitting, a peg and socket or a square top plate fitting. The standard colour of these shepherd castors tends to be beige, however dark brown and bright nickel are available by special order. The form and function of these ball castors has not changed for years, and still proves to be popular ...
... with furniture manufacturers and designers.
More recently, however, there has been an explosion of designs for furniture castors, and for a more modern twist, a range of designer castors has been developed. These contemporary castors meet design demands of both form and function. With a range of single or twin wheel castors, with a mixture of chrome and silver bodies housing sleek rubber tyres. These designer castors offer consumers a more modern and contemporary option. Designer castors have proven to be ideal for modern point of sale and shop fitting designs, as well as concept furniture, tables and chairs. With a range of sizes from 65mm diameter castors up to 100mm diameter castors, and with either threaded stem fittings or plate attachments, designer castors can not only offer elegant modern looks, but practical assembly.
The smallest furniture castors available come with a 40mm diameter wheel. These miniature castors, suitable for shop fitting and display equipment, aswell as furniture are light duty and incredibly discreet. These small castors can be fitted into furniture and displays by a peg and socket system suitable for either metal or wood furniture legs. The FF series of miniature castors are fully swivelling, with ease of movement, and still will take up to fifty kilos each.
Designer furniture castors have to meet the high standards of furniture designers and manufacturers, as well as meet the end consumers exacting requirements. Designer furniture castors, unlike industrial castors, are required to be particularly aesthetic, and look appropriate in a modern home environment. This in mind, there is a vast array of furniture castors available with either a single wheel or double wheels. The range of materials furniture castors are manufactured in varies from steel, polypropylene to synthetics and rubber. Sizes range from the smallest 40mm diameter castors up to 100mm diameter castors. With all these options, designer furniture castors not only provide mobility within the home environment, but also achieve a contemporary style with a modern designer twist!
