Internet On The Go
How often do you browse the internet on your mobile phone? Once a day? Once and hour? Or every five minutes? Now that we have smart phones, more and more of us are using them as our main means of internet usage outside of work.
It''s all too tempting to pop onto Facebook, check the news on the BBC''s website or maybe even do some shopping on Amazon whilst sitting on the bus stuck in London traffic. Smart phones and mobile internet bring a whole new meaning to multi-tasking.
It seems however, that we are becoming addicted to our smartphones. It''s not just the shiny, stylish designs, the high-quality cameras, the easy-to-use mp3 players and the ability to add myriad ''apps''. One of the biggest selling points is an internet browser capability that is fast and efficient.
In December 2009, according to the GSM Association, 16 million people used their mobile phones to access the internet in the UK. And this was only from the top three networks of the five in the UK.
Our favourite site by far is Facebook. The social network giant accounts for almost 50% of online usage from mobile phones in Britain. In ...
... December alone we spent 2.2billion minutes on Facebook on our mobiles.
Google sites came in second but were way behind in terms of total time spent browsing. 395 minutes in December is how long we spent on Google''s sites such as Gmail and Google search. We seem to prefer going on search, online email and technological sites rather than news and shopping sites.
The top 10 was made up of Microsoft, Orange, AOL, Apple, Vodafone and Yahoo. With BBC sites down at number seven with 83 million minutes and dating site Flirtomatic came in at 54 million minutes. In total we spent more than 60 million hours or 4.8 billion minutes online on our mobiles during December.
So which smartphones are the best on the market right now for internet usage? You don''t have to wait for a second with the Nokia N900. It has super fast internet, up to 7.2Mbps as well as a super fast processor and 32GB of space to store files, pictures and music and you can have multiple websites open as you can easily tab between them all. Add to this a full QWERTY keyboard and PC synchronisation and you have the perfect smartphone.
The BlackBerry Bold 9700 is another clever smartphone. It lives up to the superb BlackBerry reputation for internet and email. It has fast 3G internet, QWERTY keyboard, plenty of space for documents as well as the ability to insert a microSD card if you need even more space. Plus is comes fully loaded with the UK''s favourites Facebook and Twitter. Getting a great new mobile phone from Vodafone has never been easier according to Bonny Kominek, an expert in communications technology.
