Annual travel insurance may at first appear to be a luxury and a waster of money, but if you are a particular type of person then it may in fact make total sense. Travel more than twice a year? Even within the UK? You may end up saving a lot of money. You should read on.

First of all, allow me to make the case for travel insurance in general. Now anyone who has travelled before will know the long list of things that can go wrong. Lost passports, luggage, money are just the beginnings of your woes. What happens if your hostel is a nightmare or worse, doesn''t even exist? What if that rental car you needed to get the 500miles to your hotel has magically disappeared?

Even worse is when you start factoring in the disaster scenario. Picture it; plane crash, tsunami, earthquake, mudslides, civil war, bombings. The world is no longer a na?ve and happy place. Things can go wrong and should you be unlucky enough to find yourself thrust amongst it then having a little bit of financial security cannot hurt right?

OK, so we''ve established you''re getting insured. But why would you ever cough up annually when instead ...
... you can just do it one time you do before the trip? Well the answer to that is a very simple one; it will save you money. Same as everything the world over; the bulk buyer gets the best in terms of prices.

Of course, if you''re only travelling once a year then there is little need to bother. However, you might be very surprised to learn that many companies offer very competitive deals that begin to become affordable when you are travelling only twice or three times a year. AA Travel Insurance is the current champion for annual travel insurance providers and has become the benchmark against which other providers set themselves.

Also, the types of people who go in for this compared with previously are changing. In the past it tended to be businessmen who have frequent trips abroad, or reporters or aid workers; people who tend to find themselves heading to rather unfortunate places on a rather unfortunately regular basis.

However, even family holidays can sometimes happen more than once a year. You should also check the fine print of your policy. Sometimes travel can be defined simply as travelling a particular distance or crossing a border. If you happen to travel to Scotland or Wales on a regular basis then maybe you can get a policy that factors this in.

My point is that you shouldn''t write things off on principle. Many see annual travel insurance as a luxury but for a lot it can actually be a boon. Check to see if you''re one of them. Augustine Starcic recommends that you always take out annual travel insurance.
