New kitchen cabinets can have a dramatic effect on not only your kitchen, but the overall look and feel of your home. While custom cabinets would be nice, you can often get comparable quality at a much cheaper price.

Semi-custom cabinets offer the same styles and selections as custom cabinets only without the high cost and the waiting time. A manufacturing facility will create cabinet sizes per your specifications out of a wide selection of wood or wood looking materials, depending on your budget. This is an option that many homeowners choose for quality wood cabinets without paying top dollar.

Stock kitchen cabinets can be found at home improvement stores and lumber companies. Depending on where you get them, some stock cabinets will be made out of plywood, but the majority are made out of particleboard. By industry standards, base cabinets are 24" deep and 34 ½ " high. Wall cabinets, also known as upper cabinets are a standard 12" deep and can range anywhere from 30" to 42" in height, depending on if a space is left between the kitchen cabinets and the ceiling. The drawback to stock cabinets, is that ...
... you may have to use filler strips to fill in gaps for uneven dimensions in a room.

The latest trend in wood cabinets is the ready-to-assemble or RTA line of kitchen cabinets. Made of strong plywood, these cabinet boxes are easy to assemble and come in an array of different styles and finishes. In addition, an easy to put together cam lock assembly allows you to lock each piece securely in place. Most times, a screwdriver is the only tool needed to totally complete your project of new wood cabinets using RTA.

Even more amazing are the different sizes that are made for a customized look that will fit in virtually any sized area. Together with wood tones that radiate the shades and styles of today, it is close to impossible to tell the difference between pricey custom made wood cabinets and RTA kitchen cabinets.

Door and drawer fronts for wood cabinets can be made from an MDF base or particleboard that has a surface finish of laminate. Hardly ever is plywood used for fronts because it cannot be shaped into an attractive looking finished product. Solid wood is always a beautiful option but by using wood components, the appearance of natural wood can be developed at a much lower cost.

MDF cored doors and drawers can be shaped, coated with veneers, painted or laminated and still retain a natural look. Many manufacturers prefer this type of wood based material over the others due to the flexibility in achieving professional looks.

Kitchen cabinets offer many more choices today than what was available forty years ago with easy installation thanks to RTA wood cabinets. It is up to the individual to decide what type of cabinetry is right for them but all types should be considered for comparison's sake.
If you are looking for high quality, solid wood cabinets for your kitchen at an affordable price, you have to take a look at RTA cabinets. I have been remodeling kitchens for over 10 years, and they have helped me save thousands on each kitchen.
