Everyone knows that the kitchen and bathroom(s) are what ultimately sell a home. The reason being that they are used the most and they are both very important rooms in the home. There are a wide range of projects that can be undertaken to improve your kitchen or bathroom- everything from a quick repainting to a full demo of the room, so it will depend on your budget. If done properly, a remodel will not only add functionality, but beauty and value to your home as well. However, there are ways to save money, especially if you tackle both the kitchen and bathroom remodeling at the same time.

When starting a kitchen and bathroom remodel, the best place to begin is with the countertops. Some people choose to begin with the cabinets. However, this is not always the best option, the reason being that in some cases you can "touch up" certain areas of the cabinets in order to save several hundred dollars. The countertops are usually the first thing the eye notices, so it should be invested in first. As you are shopping for countertops, consider the look instead of how easy they are to maintain. For example, if you are ...
... considering tile countertops, this can become costly, depending on the tile. However, if your home has a high value, then tile might be the way to go.

Since the bathroom and kitchen will be remodeled at the same time, you can buy the countertops for both projects in one purchase. By using this method, you can often get a better deal when you buy both or in bulk. Sometimes, privately owned supply companies will give you a better deal than by dealing with a large corporate chain. Asking to speak to the owner is also a good idea. When shopping for countertops, you might want to also look at any discount resource shops. Some habitat stores will sell discounted home improvement items that have been donated by builders. If you do not mind searching and going through large warehouses, then you can often find a good deal.

If you decide that you would like to add new cabinets as well then consider "ready to assemble" kitchen cabinets. They are not as high quality as the hand crafted styles that are so expensive, but they are more affordable and they look just as good. As the name suggests, they are ready to be pieced together. All of the cabinet packages have everything that you need, from the doors, shelves, and frames to the knobs and hardware. The directions are included and all you usually need is a screwdriver and a little elbow grease.

It goes without saying that doing the home improvement projects on your kitchen and bathroom yourself will save you a great deal of money. Hiring professionals to lay the tile, the countertops, or any other upgrades is easier. But it becomes costly. Some home improvement stores offer free classes to teach you how to do all of these upgrades by yourself. It can be time consuming, but you will feel great knowing that you saved money and you did the project all by yourself.
