The Jewish Shofar

The blowing or the sounding of the Ram's horn or the Shofar horn is the most important ceremony and commandments of the Torah. The sounding of the horn is the symbol of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year and it symbolizes the beginning of the days of the repentance for Jews as well as for Yom Kippur.

The Shofar is one of the most ancient objects and symbols of ancient culture and religion. It has a special place in the history of Jews and Israel since centuries. It had been used for signaling tragedies as well as holiday and even to mark victories and summon the armies. When the Wailing Wall had been liberated by the Israeli in the year 1967, the Shofar horn had been sounded by the Chief Rabbi in order to mark the event as a historically important event for the Jewish people as well religion.

Reasons for Using the Horn at Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah:

* In the ancient times, it had been used by the Jews for important events like the trumpets were later used for summoning the armies and for coronations of the kings. Therefore, it had been chosen to mark the beginning of the ...
... Rosh Hashanah. The sound of the Shofar horn and the prayers are the integral part of the ceremony which forms a part of the Jewish religion and the Jewish community.
* The sounding of the Jewish horn is used for expressing repentance during the start of the Repentance period of ten days.
* The sound commemorates the sounding of the horn when at Mt. Sinai the Torah had been given. It also signals the covenant between God and the Jews.
* It also signifies and commemorates the great message and the thoughts of prophets. The sound of the horn stands for the voices of these prophets which call all the believers to live and love the words of God.
* The sound of the horn reminds all of us of the cry of agony of Children of Israel when the ancient temple had been destructed and completely destroyed.
* The horn is made from the Ram's horn. This signifies the willingness of Abraham to make the sacrifice of Isaac, as a sign of obedience to God. Instead, God provided ram which was caught in thicket. This signifies our faith in God just like Abraham had demonstrated his faith in God by being ready to sacrifice his own son.
* The Orthodox Jews believe that the sound of the horn signifies the Messiah's coming. Blowing the horn would remind all of us to be steadfast in our faith in the Messiah's coming and the Judgment Day.
