Resolving ' Scanpst.exe- Unable To Locate Component...' Error
OLMAPI32.dll is an Outlook MAPI32.program file, which when corrupt or missing, is known to cause several errors when a user accesses Microsoft Outlook or its built-in utilities such as, Scanpst.exe. Microsoft Outlook stores all its data in a file called, PST (Personal Storage Folder) and scanpst is the tool that is required to repair it when the file goes corrupted. But it may become inaccessible if OLMAPI32.dll is damaged or missing.
Here is an error message that specifically occurs when Outlook cannot locate OLMAPI32.dll, one of the important files that it requires to start its PST file repair tool - Inbox Repair Tool. Each time, when the user tries to access the scanpst file, Outlook returns the below error message:
SCANPST.EXE- Unable To Locate Component; This application has failed to start because OLMAPI32.dll was not found. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.
Since Outlook PST repair tool cannot be accessed, the damaged PST remains in same state and cannot be repaired.
The main reasons for the above error to occur include damaged Outlook installation or OLMAPI32.dll missing ...
... from Outlook folder. In many cases, existence of two or more copies of scanpst.exe file has also been found to cause the same trouble.
Many Microsoft Outlook 2007 users experience similar errors after installing latest Microsoft updates. The problem has mostly been observed by beta users of Office 2007.
Methods to recover
Below are some solutions that can help you access the file and hence repair the corrupted PST in such cases:
(1) Perform Office 2007 repair. Check if the problem persists. If yes, follow the next step.
(2) Boot in safe mode, locate the MSMAPI32.dll file, and rename it to MSMAPI32.old. Install Microsoft Outlook 2003.
In some cases the Scanpst tool is unable to fix PST corruption, simply because of its limited functionalities. To deal with such problems, you should use a third-party PST repair application.
With exclusive PST repair procedures, these applications generally prove to be more powerful than Outlook's Scanpst.exe utility.
