How to make a thesis statement? This requires some insight in the process of writing a thesis statement. A thesis statement is a one liner or a few sentences that come at the end of the introductory paragraph of your research paper. A research statement will catch the main essence of the research paper. It will be written in such a manner that the main issue of the research paper will be stated in that few sentences.
The research paper will start with a hypothesis and the attempt to test it in a scientific manner. Hypothesis testing is about making inferences about a population from only a small sample. The bottom line in hypothesis testing is when we ask ourselves whether a population like we think this one is would be likely to produce a sample like the one we are looking at.
The important thing for testing hypothesis is collection of data from samples, classified it and analyzed it for arriving solutions. Here, the investigator collects the data through trained enumerators. The enumerators contact the informants and with the help of a schedule collect the required information. Schedule is a list of items on ...
... which the enumerators have to collect and record information. It is filled in by the enumerators. Provided the enumerators are well trained, the data collected by this method are reliable and accurate. This method is especially useful when the information is illiterate and they are spread over a vast area. This method is cheap. This method requires intense training of the enumerators. Reliability of the data depends mainly on the training given to them and their integrity. In this method, there is scope for bias.
The collected data is classified. Classification is a systematic grouping of the units according to their common characteristics. Here, units having common characteristics are grouped together. Each of these groups is called class. Classification helps in the following ways-
1) Classification reduces the bulk of the data.
2) Classification simplifies the data.
3) Classification facilitates comparison of characteristics.
4) Classification renders the data ready for statistical analysis.
A tabular arrangement of classified data is called tabulation. Tabulation is a systematic arrangement of classified data in rows and columns of a table. It is a neat form of presentation of classified data. There are four types of classification. They are (a) Quantitative classification (classification with regard to variable) (b) Qualitative classification (classification with regard to attribute) (c) Spatial classification (geographical classification) (d) Temporal classification (chronological classification, classification with regard to time). Classification of units on the basis of a single characteristic is called simple or one way classification. Simultaneous classification of units on the basis of two or more characteristics is called many fold classification. A table showing many fold classified data is called contingency table. Classification of units on the basis of a characteristic into two classes is called dichotomy. Thus, classification on the basis of sex as Men and Women is dichotomy. Classification of people as ‘married' and ‘unmarried' is dichotomy.
After classification the data is analyzed and the conclusion is reached.
