With today's rapidly evolving culture, more and more couples are trying to get pregnant later on in life. Of course, as fertility begins to dwindle after around age 30, this can often prove difficult and couples (particularly women) need a natural boost to enable conception to take place.

Many choose acupuncture for this natural boost, as it is non invasive and gradual, but effective. Introduced to the Western world in the 1970's, this method is now used to treat a huge range of conditions from acne to the pain associated with cancer. It involves putting small needles (which are hollow inside) into the skin, in certain areas of the body to restore the flow of energy around it. According to Chinese medicine, there are twenty energy pathways that run through the pathway, and if any of these become blocked then medical conditions can occur.

The needles are rotated or vibrated during an acupuncture session in order to unblock the energy pathways. In fertility, the energy pathways that bypass the uterus and kidneys are often the focus as these organs are responsible for hormone secretion and moderation. If a mental ...
... condition is affecting an individual's ability to conceive (e.g. depression which can lower the libido) this can also be treated using acupuncture.

Men may benefit from acupuncture treatment for fertility if they suffer from a condition such as erectile dysfunction, or sperm with low motility. Acupuncture works best for problems that have developed over the past few months or years, rather than congenital condition present from birth, so for women with conditions like having only one fallopian tube, another fertility treatment may be needed. With that said, acupuncture is used by a huge number of couples at the same time as IVF, as both can complement each other.

It is important to inform your acupuncturist and IVF doctor that you are considering having or are already undertaking the other treatment. You should also discuss having acupuncture with your GP if you have any concerns.

Having needles inserted into the skin is not something many people enjoy, but acupuncture is specifically designed to relax and is not painful. Many people also worry about the cost, but in comparison to some methods of fertility treatment it is quite reasonable. If you take time to research different acupuncture centers you may find some offering a 2 to 4 month course (recommended) for $350 or even less.

Anybody considering acupuncture to help increase their fertility should first explore some of the different centers in their area. You should always decide upon one that has qualified acupuncturists and one that is recognized by the local authorities to ensure you are getting the very best treatment.
