In Search Of The Best Biodegradable Bags?

Single use bags are getting a lot of political press these days and the question of paper or plastic at the grocery store seems a bit old school at this point, or is it? Some grocery chains have switched to a new version of plastic, or as it is marketed, biodegradable plastic to ease the burden of this grocery checkout dilemma. The real question remains, are biodegradable plastic bags really biodegradable or rather, do they meet some standard from the government for low density polyethylene content? Lets check the facts.
These biodegradable bags are still petroleum-based, and while they do break down into smaller particles, chemicals eventually show up in the food chain and our bodies, according to Susan Hubbard, CEO of Eureka Recycling in Minneapolis.
We went in search of the best of the best biodegradable bags for the home, and yes, we tried out the products just to be sure. First off, biodegradable dog poop bag. There are many to choose from, but we went with 3 brands of popular dog poop bags to get started.
First poopbags.com sells a self branded variety of dog poop bags at reasonable prices. The bags ...
... are convenient and come on a roll and while a bit tricky to open the bag to pickup fido's waste, the good news is that the material stayed intact. On the downside, and here is the issue, this brand proudly touts that they meet ASTM D6400 for biodegradability. Still petroleum based.
Next we tried Dogipot, the Oxo biodegradable dog poop bag. This brand has been around since 1983 and in the U.S. since 1994. They are big with municipalities and are a good product with a faux plastic feel to them. What is oxo biodegradable? Again, refer to US Standard Guide ASTM-D6954-04.
Lastly, we tried the Biobag brand of biodegradable dog poop bags. This brand also makes biodegradable trash bags, and biodegradable 3 gallon waste bags, stood apart from the others in our trial. This brand of dog poop bags meets the same ASTM D6400 as the poopbags.com brand, however, No polyethylene is used in the production of BioBags. Could this be true? Well, the facts don't lie, BioBag is the best selling brand of certified 100% biodegradable and 100% compostable bags made from the material, Mater-Bi. Also, they are easy to use and no, the material didn't break or crumble during use.
