Snow, ice, rain and wind as well as temperatures that have plummeted well below zero, this winter has been rather more eventful than in previous years. Rain and wind we may be used to but ice rinks for roads and skiing in Sussex we are not. All this Arctic weather is leading to a mass migration south for the summer.

A recent survey of 2,000 UK residents by Lloyds TSB found that 33% of those asked blame the UK''s wintry cold weather for fleeing the UK this summer. According to the research, 35.6 million of us, over half the UK''s total population are planning to buck last year''s ''staycation'' trend and book a holiday abroad this year.

Over 30% of us have already booked our summer sunshine, with a further 24% planning to book before Easter. So where is everyone going? Not far according to the Lloyds survey. Despite the almost parity of the pound to euro, most of us, i.e. 60% will be enjoying all that Europe has to offer.

All this snow has turned us into a pack of sun-hungry holiday makers. City breaks may have been a winner last year because of the low costs involved without even taking a day off work, but ...
... this year 45% of us just want to lounge about in the sun.

Back with a vengeance are cheap and cheerful package holidays and self-catering is taking market share away from un-budget friendly hotels. Fewer people are risking buying on credit this year too. As a direct result of the credit crisis, credit cards are being kept firmly at bay.

40% of us are paying by debit card as fears of ongoing credit repayments are destroying visions of relaxed holidays. A further 25% will flash the cash although 33% will still have to whack out the plastic to enjoy some summer lovin''.

Although you may be looking for ways to save money on your summer holiday, forgetting or not bothering to purchase travel insurance is not one of them. 8.5 million travellers admit they have needed medical attention whilst on holiday, yet 3.6 million of us don''t travel with it, 20% don''t consider it to be worthwhile and 25% don''t even think about it.

When you do the maths it seems ridiculous not to purchase insurance. It can cost just a few pounds a day, less if you have an annual policy, and yet it can save you hundreds if not thousands if your require any kind of medical treatment whilst on holiday. And for the 12% of travellers heading to the US this summer, you are really making a huge mistake if you don''t buy travel insurance. Augustine Starcic recommends that you always take out cheap travel insurance, just to be safe.
