Any thorough traveller of South East Asia will have doubtless encountered the beautiful climate, the delicious and diverse cuisine and the multicultural splendour of Malaysia. Here''s a quick look at why Malaysia is such a popular destination.

Starting from the cosmopolitan hub of Kuala Lumpur, which is where most international flights will arrive, it is easy to get a taste of Malaysia''s culturally diverse population within minutes. A quick walk through colourful and chirpy China town will lead you into the more atmospheric Little India, passing through Merdaka Square - the major colonial centre of the city.

For a spot of Hindu culture, take a trip out to the Batu Caves to marvel at the natural wonder of these rock formations, used as a dramatic setting for Hindu worship particularly during the Thaipusam festival (January/February). After all this city sightseeing, head to one of the spectacular shopping malls along Bukit Bintang and enjoy a relaxing evening meal in one of the many excellent restaurants down this famous road.

On the other hand, adrenaline seekers should head straight for Taman Negara. Here you will find yourself deep in some of the oldest rainforest in the whole of South East Asia. The night tour of the jungle, complete with overnight stay in treetop residence, is not to be missed. If you are planning on trekking, hiking, biking or kayaking your way through this fascinating terrain, be sure to get the thumbs up from your travel insurance company beforehand.

If you prefer walking and hiking at a more comfortable pace, traversing less difficult terrain, then the Cameron Highlands could be the place for you. The jungle tours here are more family friendly and can include an eclectic range of other activities, from tea sampling to conservation work, according to your schedule and your preferences.

For the ultimate destination in relaxation, head for Langkawi island of the north west coast, close to the Thai border. Miles of pristine beaches, perfect sunsets, luscious spas, laidback hotels and home-stays and friendly locals make this one of the most enjoyable tourist destinations in Malaysia. As it becomes more popular, it is starting to lose something of its unspoilt charm. However, Langkawi is big enough for you to find your own quiet corner of sun, surf and sand if you feel the need.
