Although DWI offence and its long-term, adverse effects are well known to all law enforcement and traffic patrol departments all over the world, from the social standpoint, it is not easy to mandate and implement all the safe driving rules.

The general public, in spite of general awareness of safe driving rules, very often take unnecessary risks on special occasion or during festivities, completely forgetting that they put others' and their own lives at risks.

Preparations for Social Drinking

Here are some proper way to handle "social drinking habits" that may be provided to all adult drivers, and especially teenagers, who want to exercise their freedom to drive on special occasions:

The days a driver decides to participate in social drinking on an occasion, he or she must designate a sober person to drive the car for that day.

A regular driver has the option of taking any hired transportation such as a cab to attend social events if he or she plans to drink.

The driver has the option of getting dropped and picked up by a sober family member or friend in order to attend and participate ...
... in social drinking on special days.

In extreme cases, where a driver has indulged in unplanned drinking in any social event, he or she has the choice of returning home, escorted by the police or escorted by a well-meaning, sober person present in the social event.

Lots of couples have a pre-arranged agreement on sharing driving duties on specific occasions, ensuring one remains sober to drive back after attending the event.

Social-Awareness Programs on DWI

DWI-related traffic crimes are usually severe in nature, and all the socially aware groups such As Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) routinely carry out projects to make the general public aware of the dangerous aspects of drunk driving. Many of these mothers may have lost a son, a daughter, or a close someone in a traffic accident related to DWI.

More and more, traffic offenders are made to go through very rigorous rehabilitation programs including community services, prison terms, suspended license, and so forth, so that they learn to respect the traffic laws.

Social Response to Drunk Driving

DWI and DWI offenders, are handled very carefully from a social standpoint. Drinking and driving, in many cases, is cited as a right to freedom or as a right to enjoy life, and it is only through increasing awareness programs that law enforcement or social- awareness groups will succeed in communicating the importance of observing safe driving habits to the general public.

In the last two decades, owing to an alarming rise in the number of road vehicles and associated road accidents, all regulatory bodies involved in formulating and enforcing safe driving rules and regulations have released many, many social-awareness and rehabilitation programs to deal with drunk drivers on the road.

Teenaged drivers are usually influenced with driving- and insurance-points-incentive plans so that they adopt safe driving habits from an early stage.
