System Or Hardware Malfunction
System or hardware malfunction is the biggest factor, which cause data loss. It is seen that almost 44percent of data loss situations occur due to system or hardware failure. Hard disks being mechanical devices are more susceptible for wear and tear. It is seen that the estimated average life of any hard disk is about 3 years. Hardware becomes unable to function properly owing to several reasons. Let us have a look at some of these reasons.
First one is the Media or Head Crash. Hardware failures can arise due to media or head collisions. Platters are rotating at the rate of about 150 rotations in a second. Heads are separated by micro distance. Even a small disturbance between this micro-distance can cause the hard disk to stop its functioning. If the read/write head touches this highly rotating hard disk platter then it may lead to head crash.
Even if the small dust particles enter the sealed drive unit and collects on magnetic surfaces, then possibility of being stuck into micro gap between the disk and head is there. In addition to this, if the disk fells to the floor then it can cause hard disk failure. ...
... Furthermore, the slight vibration or jerk may unsettle alignments. Also it can cause hardware failure.
Electrical failure is another issue, which can ultimately result into the data loss. This situation may arise anytime. Electrical failure can directly result due to the circuit board failure. It is present at the bottom of the hard drive. Some of the reasons behind electric failure are electro-static discharge, damaging circuit whilst installation and faulty components. It is necessary to keep the system well ventilated and clean. If not so then it can lead to electrical components malfunction. If you want to your system to work properly then you must maintain your system in proper condition. In addition to this, it is better if you keep your system in cool conditions. This will help it to function well in its long run.
Next issue is controller failure. You are trying to boot the system; however, instead of getting it started, if you receive an error message, which displays "HDD Controller Failure", then there is some problem with controller. It may lead to the data loss. Let us see at some of the reasons behind controller failure.
Adapter is not properly fitted in the slot
Accidental user intervention and failing CMOS battery, which may lead to wrong data in CMOS setup
IRQ disagreement with other devices
IDE drives are not slaved or mastered in proper manner
Partition table or Master Boot Record (MBR) is distorted
Incompatible IDE drives (installed with slave and master)
If you come across any of the above problems with your system, then you must prepare yourself for "data loss" situation. However if data Loss situation occurs, then instead of getting panic, you have to find some ways to get back our data.
