Is Tv Going To Die At Some Point… Because Of Apple?
I can spend hours in front of a TV. I prefer watching TV on a big screen, sitting at a comfortable distance rather than on my 15 inch laptop screen, in my face and on my lap. But no matter how I enjoy watching TV, I can’t help but get this recurrent feeling that in the coming years TV will be replaced with some sort of Internet-based system.
While Home Entertainment Systems already can integrate Internet through PC and Mac through a home TV, based on the ability of the PC or Mac to output HDMI signals, I’m thinking more along the lines of getting rid of Cable/Satellite altogether.
I don’t think we will replace our living room TVs with computers, but we very well may connect all of our computers to the TV or some smart company will create a system that gives us the same couch-potato/remote user-friendly experience that we have enjoyed for last few decades. As mentioned we already see this; but with innovation and further integration could “internet†just be another channel or network on your TV?
Where is all this hysteria coming ...
... from? Well, Patently Apple discovered that “Apple is working on a system that replicates TV commercials for online video.†I’m not quite sure why this is any different from what we see while watching other online advertisements (i.e. the ads you watch before being given access to Hulu videos), but it does make me look at a bigger picture.
According to Gizmodo, “Apple’s reportedly been heavily pitching networks both on selling TV shows for cheapâ€99 centsâ€and signing on to an iTunes TV subscription service that would bundle a selection of TV shows from major networks for 30 bucks a month… The networks have been cool to both suggestions, given that TV’s expensive to produce and stuff.â€Â
With Apple purchasing this patent and pushing these ideas, it’s not unbelievable that they would want to come up with an advertising system and monetize from it. It’s extremely smart for the hardware manufacturers to take charge of the system so they can continue to monetize even after the initial purchase.
If Apple releases its own system for advertising they will more than likely push watching content online rather than on TV. Think of it as high school and Apple is the head cheerleader telling everyone what is popular. Most want to fit in, so they listen and her influence is undeniable. With a shift of TV viewers going from cable/satellite, Apple can corner another market, and it seems they are setting up to do just that.
With Apple’s iTunes store and hardware for making watching TV a more comfortable and familiar experience on the computer, Apple is definitely setting up to be a rival to Comcast, DirecTV and the like.
