Ancient Kameiros

Ancient Kameiros is located near the North West coast of Rhodes near the cape of Agios Minas. It was one of the three large ancient cities of the island that along with Lindos and Ialyssos were joined in the 5th century ...
... to make the Rhodes state of Roman Empire.

Historic Importance:

The ancient city of Kameiros is said to be established and found by Dorians. However, as revealed by ancient ruins of Mycenaean necropolis that lies close to Kalovarda village, it was first inhabited by Achaeans.

Ancient Kameiros was an agricultural city that produced and dealt in figs, wine and oil. It is also said that it was the first Rhodian city that made its own coins and used it as currency.

Kameiros which is located at a distance of about thirty kilometres in the west of Rhodes town is historically significant in the Dodecanese complex. The whole town was destroyed two times by natural disasters; once by the earthquake in 226 BC and second time by the earthquake in 142 BC.

Construction of the city:

Construction of the Ancient Kameiros is also unique as it comprised of three levels. The first level of the city was on top of a hill. Here the temple of Athena Kameiras goddess and the famous Acropolis lie. A reservoir was constructed here in 6th century BC in order to meet the needs of four hundred families. A Stoa was also constructed next to this reservoir along with two Doric columns.

The second level of the city was the main settlement area that was constructed around the Acropolis that had streets and houses for the people. The last level of this ancient city comprised of Doric temple which was built for Agora and Apollo. This temple was used as a meeting point and to discuss various political issues.
