Offline file .OST is very much useful to us when we want to work offline in MS Outlook. Outlook user is aware of the fact that OST files are stored in local system i.e. the system we use while working offline. An OST Offline folder doesn’t exist on Exchange Server. Being located locally in the system, you can change the location of the local Offline Folders file .OST to a different folder or hard drive.
The file on the hard disk which is containing all the offline folders is the Offline Folder file. .ost is the file extension for the same. You can create it automatically when you set up Outlook or when you first make a folder available offline. Now it’s easy to change the location of OST files. This also applies to when you use Cached Exchange Mode with Microsoft Exchange Server.
Steps for changing the location of Offline file of Outlook
Follow the given below steps to make this change possible.
Exit Outlook.
Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click Mail, ...
... and then click E-mail Accounts.
Click View or change existing e-mail accounts, and then click Next.

Select the Microsoft Exchange Server account, and then click Change.
Clear the Use Cached Exchange Mode check box.
Click More Settings.
Click the Advanced tab.

Click Offline Folder File Settings.

Click Disable Offline Use, and then click Yes in the dialog box that appears.
Click Offline Folder File Settings.
Click Browse, go to the location where you want to save your .ost file, and then click Open.
Click OK.
Select the Use Cached Exchange Mode check box.
Click Next button.
Then click Finish.
So you can see that with some changes made in the settings you can change the location of OST files of Outlook. There are instances when you want to access your OST file in non-Exchange environment. That is you need to Convert OST to PST for accessing them in non-Exchange environment.
There are other reasons that compel a user to Convert OST to PST. In case of server crash or deletion of a user mailbox or crossing of 2 GB file size limitation, Offline Storage Files .OST remain on local system holding emails, contacts, tasks and other item on the original mail account. You need to Convert OST to PST to Personal Storage File .pst format to be read with Outlook or other compatible mail client, using third party tools. Emails, attachments, images, documents, sent items, drafts, journals, calendars, appointments, email properties, to-do list, emails of “Deleted Items” folder and every other folder with sub-folder is easy to convert with ost to pst converter.
