Work clothes for women are now at their most sophisticated. Gone are the 80s shoulder pads and the tiny nipped-in waists. Modern tailoring now means that you can get a suit that looks sharp and no nonsense while still looking feminine and feeling comfortable. Take a look at our guide to putting your workwear wardrobe together.

Womens workwear does not have to mean a wardrobe full of dull grey suits. By mixing and matching pieces, adding accessories and choosing suits that have a modern cut, you can show off your own personal style while still looking smart and elegant at work.

Accessories should ideally be simple and should not jangle - like stacks of bangles and bracelets and some earrings can - as this can be distracting those around you while you work and attend meetings.

Colours allow you to have fun with your workwear wardrobe. It is best to start with a suit or skirt in a smart yet chic shade of black or grey and then team it with a more colourful blouse, or add a scarf. Key colours for this season are pastel blues and greens, khaki and olive greens as well as feminine nude shades.

Looking smart ...
... at work will make you feel more confident as well as helping you look more professional. Pay attention to clothing stains, ripped tights and scuffs and marks on shoes, but also keep your hair in trim and your nails clean and manicured.

No working wardrobe is complete without a suit or two. Whether you want a trouser suit, skirt suit or both, look for modern tailoring. Unusual cuts help to update the traditional office suit, showing your figure off to its best while feeling comfortable to wear and giving off a strong and streamlined imaged.

When choosing a bag to take to the office, slouchy bags can look a little too relaxed. Go for a more structured bag that makes it easier to keep your papers in order as this will give off a professional image too.

Shoes can work to liven up a work suit. If you like heels, then keep them simple without too much detailing, and choose a chunkier heel, wedge heel or kitten heel if you are not used to walking in taller heels. Pumps and sophisticated flats are available in all shapes and colours - look for a good quality leather pair that will be comfortable to wear on a daily basis.
