How I Loved Those Dancing Tights
I couldn't believe we were moving again. Another school, another year of trying to fit in and start again. I was 13 and trying to find out who I was, a woman, a child or just caught somewhere between the two. It didn't help that my parents wanted to move again. Why when I had just made friends. It had only been a year since we moved here and I finally felt at home.
As I walked into the school that morning I felt that familiar sick feeling. New faces, strange hallways with the hustle and bustle children laughing and talking. I felt awkward and out of place. The only thing that got me through was the dance class that was offered at the school. Dancing was my passion. I had pretty much grown up wearing dancing tights. They were like a comfy pair of jeans, like the one friend that I knew would always be there for me.
My dance class was the last of the day. Its really the only thing that kept me going. As the final bell rang and I headed toward the studio I started to relax. At least I could get lost in the music. I knew once I put on those dancing tights I would feel at ease. I felt the stares of the other students ...
... as I made my way into the change room. I made sure I had a private cubicle and I pulled out my favourite blue dancing tights. They were an old friend, a comfort and they gave me courage.
As we all stood in the studio facing the mirror, I felt everyone's eyes on me. At the time I felt as though they were mocking me and I felt like an outsider but looking back now I can see it was just curiosity. The music began and we all stretched and warmed up. Soon I was lost in the music. All too soon the class was over and I headed back to change.
As I removed the dancing tights and remembered the reality of where I was again, my eyes swelled up with tears. I felt so alone. Suddenly I heard laughter outside my cubicle and a knock at the door. I must have been in there longer than I thought. I quickly dried my tears and opened the door with a quick apology. There were three girls standing in front of me. I had seen them in the class but we had not spoken. The tallest one introduced herself as Amy. She said she had noticed my blue dancing tights and wondered where I got them. We started to talk and the girls asked if I wanted to walk home with them.
It has now been a year since I moved to the new school and those three girls and I are the best of friends. Dancing brought us together and keeps us together. We now all have a set of blue dancing tights and people call us the bluebells. A bond that will last a lifetime - and that is why I love those dancing tights.
