It is getting increasingly popular to entertain at home. Thanks to all the cookery programmes on the television, they have made us realise how easy it is to make delicious meals at a fraction of the prices that are charged in restaurants.

Big problem! Lack of space - your little L-shaped dining area is barely big enough to seat your own family, let alone guests. Your wife has always fancied a conservatory, but you think a good solid extension is the answer. After countless heated discussions, you both agree to compromise. You get your extension, and your wife gets her conservatory.

How? You both decide on an Orangery. An Orangery is a brick building with large windows and doors and a glazed roof. Once used as a greenhouse to protect valuable and exotic plants, Orangeries have come a long way since the 17th century when they were first used. They create a warm and inviting environment for your home. Ideal for entertaining and ideal for the family to relax in.

Orangery can be built to suit your personal needs. You will not only be given a choice of style, but you will have a choice of roofing. ...
... Polycarbonate, popularly used in conservatories, because of its light weight and heat insulation properties, is very good value for money. However, solar controlled glass is becoming more and more popular, and this is because it will keep the heat out in the summer, while retaining warmth from heating appliances during the winter, ensuring that you can use your Orangery all year round. Solar controlled glass also controls the ultra-violet rays passing through the roof, which will fade your furniture. It usually comes in clear, or a subtle blue.

If you decide you would like roof vents, you will be given a choice of manual or electrically operated vents. Although on clear evenings, the stars and the moon will provide a restful light, you might decide to have some spot lights fitted.

It is also a good idea to have some form of under floor heating when it is being built, so you will not have any unsightly pipes or radiators taking up space. Whatever you decide, it can be built to make it personal to you.

With a Orangery, entertaining will become a pleasure, not just for you, but also for your friends. Even in a very wet August, you can still have your favourite barbecue - the open roof vents taking out any odour.

It is nice that you and your wife can agree on something!
