If you’ve decided to tackle your spring cleaning yourself this year, you have a lot of work ahead of you. It’s always smart to create and consult a checklist before you get started with any immense task so you can stay on track and feel a sense of renewed motivation with every box you check.

Supplies

You will need different supplies for each type of cleaning you will undertake, as well as specific cleansers if you have certain surfaces in your home. Make a separate list for supplies and check it against your existing cadre of cleaning supplies. If you are missing anything or running low on a certain cleanser, buy more.

Basic supplies needed to get the job done fall into just a few categories:

* Dusting supplies. You will need mircofiber cloths, a microfiber dust mop for high ceilings, fans, and other hard to reach areas, and a dusting spray or furniture polish.
* Organizational supplies. The first step in organization is to get rid of what you don’t need. Trash bags can be used for items that are headed to either the trash can or donation ...
... station. Have recycling bins available for your paper, glass, and other recyclables, as well as general plastic bins for indoor and outdoor storage of items you want to keep but can’t keep out.
* Surface cleaning supplies. These include a good all-purpose cleaner, a glass cleaner, tile cleaner, wood floor or laminate cleaner, carpet cleaner, broom and dustpan, mop, bucket, and paper towels or cleaning cloths. Gloves are also a must; you will need to protect your skin from damage from harsh cleansers.
* Specialized cleaning supplies. These include oven cleaner, stovetop cleaner, marble cleaners, leather cleaner, toilet bowl cleaner, silver polish, laundry detergent, bleach and more. Items from this category will need to be added or subtracted based on the specific items in your home. Do a walk through and take inventory if you aren’t sure what you’ll need.

General Spring Cleaning Tasks

Note: remember that using certain solutions together can be dangerous, such as ammonia and bleach, which when mixed create a noxious gas that can be deadly. Always follow product instructions exactly, use the recommended product for each project, and well ventilate your workspace.

* All of your normal weekly cleaning chores apply. You will need to sweep, mop, vacuum, collect and dispose of trash, clean your mirrors, sinks and toilets, and wipe down kitchen and bathroom surfaces.
* Dusting is a very important aspect of spring cleaning, even if it can be tedious. Pick up every item in your home and wipe it down; remove books from shelves and wipe down both the shelves and the books. Dust ceiling fans, baseboards, door frames, blinds, shutters and any other surface that might collect dust.
* Spot clean areas that are usually neglected, such as walls, door surfaces and knobs and switch plates.
* Spot clean your carpet, rugs and upholstered furniture; move furniture to make sure that extra vacuuming or cleaning isn’t necessary underneath or behind areas where your furnishings sit.
* Wash windows and sliding glass doors.
* Replace filters and clean vents.
* Wash all window treatments and cloth shower curtains.
* Deep clean kitchen appliances. When you clean the refrigerator, take out the shelves and wipe them down individually; also, clean its condenser coils.
* Clean bathroom and kitchen drains.
* Clean the grout of any tiled area.
* Rotate and flip your mattresses.
