Hold on to your propaganda pamphlets, this post is going to be controversial! Trying to hold my tongue as much as possible (no pun intended), I’m going to give you the break down on the gay rights and anti-abortion commercial scandal surrounding CBS’s Super Bowl ads. We all know that buying ad space for the Super Bowl is big money. When CBS chooses to reject an ad from playing, that is big news.

Go Daddy.com is famous for putting themselves on the map as a web hosting services site by showing racy commercials during the Super Bowl. It makes sense why a gay dating site named Man Crunch wanted to run an advertisement during the Super Bowl. According to reports, the commercial features two men playing “tonsil hockey.” Needless to say, CBS rejected the commercial.

From a responsible mass communication standpoint, I feel CBS was right to reject the ad. You have to keep in mind that with a TV event of this magnitude and the time slot of a Super Bowl, children will most likely be watching. This would probably not sit well with most parents, people who are ...
... anti-gay, etc. For me, it’s not so much that the ad is about a gay site, I think that running an ad with a male and female making out would also be inappropriate to run during such a mass broadcasted event. Glad to hear CBS rejected a controversial ad from Go Daddy as well.

There was a rumor that CBS had approved an anti-abortion ad to run during the Super Bowl. The rumored ad was supposedly paid for by a known right-wing Christian organization. Running this commercial would probably be too heavy of a subject depending on how the commercial is presented. We do have freedom of speech in the U.S. but in that case, why not let gay male dating site commercial air? Just my two cents. This is a strong opinion that is shared by a certain demographic, but absolutely not everyone. Just like with the pro-gay ad, some people could be offended.

Regardless of what your opinion is on gays and abortion, these are issues where people tend to rigidly pick a side. There is usually no gray area here. Both advertisers might have more success advertising directly to their niche audiences. The audience that watches the Super Bowl would rather see funny or lighthearted commercials while gathered around with friends and family. We like to see beer, chips, pizza, cars and the E-Trade baby! Take us to our happy place. Ease up on the political/religious agendas.
