Los Cabos is one of Mexico's most popular holiday destinations. It is split into three main regions, each with its own unique appeal. However, for those who want to try a more active holiday where sport fishing is one of the main activities, you need to book your trip to the Baja tip of the region as this is where the action happens. The sport fishing here is so intensive and the fish of such excellent quality that this area has been affectionately known as the Marlin capital of the world. Marlin is one of the fish caught here. As this is sport fishing, the populations of Marlin are not in any danger since they are released once they have been caught and weighed. There is more Marlin in the Los Cabos waters than anywhere else in the world. The average fish weighs 259 pounds but they have been recorded at up to 1,100 pounds.

If you are a keen fisher but Marlin are not your thing, do not despair as the waters are also home to a range of other game fish. Also fished in the area for sport are Yellow Fin Tuna, Amberjack, Roosterfish, Billfish, Dorado and Wahoo among others, so you can see why this region is so popular with ...
... sport-fishing enthusiasts.

The density of fish in these waters is thanks mainly to the water quality which is a result of two merging sources. The waters from the California region are slow-flowing and bring cool water down which is saturated with good nutrients. These waters merge in Los Cabos with the more tropical Mexican waters that are warmer. This has created a fishing haven that spans about 40 miles around the port. This makes a choice of several key areas where fish are known to be rife. Choosing to fish in a particular area depends on the type of fish you are trying to catch. Sport fishing is fast becoming one of the most popular pastimes. The adrenaline levels are excellent, the scenery immense, and the fish return to the sea unharmed as this fishing is all in the name of sport.

The steady upswing in popularity has seen an increase in the official tournaments and competitions in the area of Los Cabos. This is now where the best of the best go to vie for the titles year after year. The competitions run throughout the whole year; however, there are more in the months of October and November. This comes down to the weather, although the fish are available all year. July through September sees hurricane season, and the seas can become incredibly dangerous. There are still sport fishing professionals who will take to the waters but for most, the strong winds and torrential rains combine to create an inhospitable environment. For many people, this means that fishing isn't something they want to be doing. If you want to combine sport fishing with a holiday in Los Cabos then you will be forgiven for wanting to seek out the more clement weather, and the heat and sun that can be found in Mexico. If you have never fished before then you need to be looking for an organized fishing trip of which you will be pleased to hear there are plenty. Experienced anglers will hire a boat in small parties to head out to sea to catch their fish, but this isn't recommended if you have no boating or sailing experience.

Long or short trips are available from many of the larger tour operator companies. These will combine a hotel, flight and a few days of charter sport fishing. To be honest, this may be the best bet for many folks. Depending on your budget, you can change the class of hotel and the type of flight and still get the fishing experience you desire. In fact, all parts of the holiday are customizable. It really just comes down to what you can spend. If you book as part of a package holiday, the rest of the family will be more than happy to lounge on the beach or by the hotel pool soaking up the sun until you return. Remember, this is sport fishing so you won't be cooking and eating your catch but the hotel restaurants may well offer some excellent fish dishes!
