There are two main types of scales on the market: analog and digital. Analog scales rely on the movement of springs when counteracting weight on the platform, or on balance beams with levers and pivots. Generally they have no computer components. They are commonly used because they tend to be less costly than digital scales.

Digital scales are far more technologically advanced than analog scales. Instead of relying on sheer gravity and spring calibration to determine weight, digital scales are comprised of a variety of computer components that aid in the accurate measurement of weight and volume. Digital scales are preferred in virtually all industries, due to their accuracy and capabilities for adaptation to other technology, like printers for readouts, and computer systems for records. Any industry that requires data based upon the results of the weighing process should use a digital scale. Analog scales are typically reserved for industries where a precise measurement of weight is not required.

When searching for a digital scale, consider the needs of your business. There is no reason to pay for features that ...
... are unnecessary. By the same token, it is necessary that all required features are present in a scale for your specific business requirements.

Consider the maximum weight that you expect having to measure with your scale and look specifically for scales that are designed to accommodate that weight range. Look for a scale that has a large enough display to reduce human error in record keeping. One inch is a comfortable height for digits on a digital scale, though the size of the digits can vary greatly. Typically, larger is better. The larger the size of the digits on the scale, the less room there is for user error when copying the weight recorded on the scale. Some scales also have a feature that will allow the scale to store previous weights in its memory. This allows the user to scroll through the previously recorded weights.

The most important specification is usually the accuracy rating of the scale. If your needs call for standard accuracy, then the determining factor will be the ruggedness of the load sensor used. Stainless steel is the best choice. If greater accuracy is needed, then an alternate technology, such as Surface Acoustic Wave Scales, also known as SAW Scales; can provide more than ten times the accuracy of standard industrial scales.

Most digital scales have an automatic tare feature, and this will certainly be a feature that you will want to ensure your scale is equipped with. Not having an automatic tare feature will increase the chances that a user accidentally forgets to manually tare the scale, therefore resulting in an inaccurate reading. This is best avoided by ensuring that the scale you purchase as an automatic tare feature.

Some digital scales are hanging scales and others are floor scales. Consider the amount of space you plan on dedicating to a scale, and the type of items that you plan on weighing. This will help you determine which scale will offer the highest level of productivity for you or your staff. Large, bulky items that are not easily lifted are typically best weighed on a floor scale, whereas items that are typically suspended or lifted are best weighed using a hanging scale or crane scale.

Overall, ensure that the scale that your purchase is the one that is the best for your individual situation. Do not look solely at scale ratings, because the best scale for water treatment, for example, is not the best scale for cattle ranchers. Find a scale suited to your industry, or if you are unsure, any reputable scale company will be able to offer assistance in tailoring your purchase to your industry.
