Costa Rica is known for its massive volcanoes such as the Arenal Volcano, Irazu, and the Poas Volcano. Although volcanoes can be quite intimidating, these volcanoes attract thousands of visitors every year. Although tiny in size, Costa Rica is home to hundreds of volcanic centers that include active, extinct and dormant volcanoes. Five of these volcanoes are active but they pose no threat to the residents here, as they do not necessarily spew molten lava all the time. They do however, release ash, steam and geyser type projections of water.

Many of Costa Rica's volcanoes are in the north, forming what is known as the backbone of the country. They are on what is called the Pacific Ring of Fire, an arc that begins in New Zealand and travels through Indonesia, the Philippines and Japan. It then runs through Alaska and turns south along North America, South America and Central America, finally terminating near Peru. Costa Rica is actually located at the top of the Pacific Ring of Fire. Many of its volcanoes are in the Central Highlands where many people often mistake them for simple mountains.

... When you decide to visit the volcanoes of Costa Rica, there is no limit to simple tours of the slopes and cones of these geological creatures. The areas that surround the volcanoes have much to offer as far as natural features that can enhance your experience here. The areas near the volcanoes offer lakes and rivers that are perfect for fishing, canoeing and swimming. There are also water sports of all types available to visitors as well. There are endless hiking trails, rugged forests and many mountainsides to explore. Horseback riding through the forests here can be great fun and a way to explore more of the area, and much faster than hiking or walking. You can even raft down some of the rivers here and see various species of wildlife along your journey.

Costa Rica's Wildlife
The wildlife in Costa Rica is also another huge attraction for visitors. There are over 500,000 animal species here which represent an incredible four percent of the planet's total species. It's home to three and a half percent of the planet's marine life too. This fantastic diversity is owed to the nation's location between North and South America. The climate and temperature are what creates an ideal setting for the animals that thrive here. Costa Rica has taken steps to help preserve and protect their animals here by declaring 26 percent of their total acreage protected land. Several wildlife refuges and private reserves have provided safe and healthy habitats for endangered species that include the quetzal, squirrel money, leatherback turtle and the great jaguar.

You can still experience the thrill of seeing some of these spectacular creatures in their natural settings by taking a wildlife tour or adventure. Although eco-tourism is a term that is often overused, this is an experience that allows for individuals to see, smell, hear and oftentimes taste the natural world with as little impact as possible. Eco-tours offer a chance to see the lush forests teeming with life, beautiful waterfalls, pristine beaches, erupting volcanoes and much more. You can experience the thrill of a "zip line" flight through the forests and many authentic cultural experiences along the way.

There is literally no other place in the world that you can see such an abundance of Earth's biological diversity. The Costa Rica rainforests and tropical rainforests are places for peace, renewal, rejuvenation and harmony. Not only is the wildlife here extraordinary but the plant life is abundant. There are more plant species in Costa Rica than the entire region of Europe.

Costa Rica's volcanoes and wildlife make this place a diverse and spectacular area to visit. There is no other place in the world that harbors such a rich environment of plants, animals and giant volcanoes. You will be entranced by the unique splendor of this tiny island. You can build memories that will last a lifetime in Costa Rica.
