One of the biggest things many look at while considering to enter a new field is potential salary and earning potential. It's being predicted that job prospects will be very good for medical coders, at least through 2016. So if you are eyeing the profession of a medical coder, you would certainly want to know more about how much a salary a medical coder takes home.


According to a source, last year, median hourly pay for beginning medical coding specialists was $12, with an increase to $16 with 5 years experience. However according to an American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) survey in 2008, the starting salary was around $14.70 per hour and $19 with five years experience.


Last year, medical coding specialists employed by hospitals earned an average of $16 per hour, although those in acute care hospitals earned around $18. Whereas contract employees, who typically work for a third party agency earn about $19 per hour. On the other hand, medical coders who have their own business earn about $22 per hour. To add to it, according to AAPC, a medical coder certification can certainly play a key role in boosting your pay package. If we go by its website, on an average, a Certified Professional Coder (CPC) earns about $43,000 annually or for that matter $20.60 per hour.


If you want to get a certification, you can get it from a professional association like AAPC by completing a tough written exam. But these days, it's not that difficult to get through such exams thanks to various training camps that prepare you inside out for the exam.
