Supply chain is a 1.3 trillion dollar industry which is advancing still with each passing year. It was reported in November 2015 that over 11 million individuals are working in this field. Despite this, there is a shortage of supply chain professionals within the industry. A study by the Supply Chain Talent Academic Initiative revealed that the demand for these professionals surpasses supply by a ratio of 6:1. It is therefore a major concern for companies to find and retain supply chain professionals.
Further, there will be 1.4 million new jobs in this industry in between now and 2018, says the U.S. Roadmap for Material Handling and Logistics.

Some of the most common career paths chosen include supply chain planning, supply chain technology, supply management/ procurement, distribution/ logistics management, and production/ operations management. Moreover, the field presents professionals with the opportunity to advance their career with experience or additional education.
