Obesity is no doubt one of the most common worries of many people as it is closely linked to many other health risks. Obesity may be due to several reasons like improper diet, lack of exercises and due to certain health conditions. In this article, we will focus on the role of diet and calories in obesity.

We take food for proper functioning of our body organs and to perform our daily activities. Food also helps build resistance against diseases and harmful infections and bacteria. But when taken in higher quantities, it get store in the body as fat and result in weight gain.

The energy that we derive from the food is measured in calorie which, in fact, is an energy measuring unit. Number of calories expended depends upon the amount of work done, age, gender and climate. A child, during the growth stage and also during playing games, a pregnant woman, during and after pregnancy, old person leading a sedentary life style, a hospitalized patient, a person working in an office, a manual laborer, a stone-cutter, will require different percentage of calories.

When we talk of calorie, total calories required by a person during a day (24 hours) will be reckoned by total calories, obtained from various sources of nutrition. Two persons of the same age, height and workload, would require, different amount of calories because metabolism of each person differs.

Two main groups, vegetarians and non-vegetarians, have to work out food items which, when combined, give total calories required by a person. There is another class adhered to both the said types of food categories. A balanced diet must be a unified entity, consisting of cereals, green vegetables, fiber, fruits, milk, meats and its various products, etc. so that the dietary intake presents a homogenous combination of essential carbohydrates, proteins, fats, minerals, vitamins etc.

It is a myth that expensive foods give better nutritious values than the cheaper ones but, luckily, the facts is the other way round. So, when working out on your food and diet, you should be more conscious of the nutritional factor than the cost factor. Seasonal vegetables and fruits are highly recommended by doctors and dieticians as they are not only cheaper but also consist of plenty of essential nutrients.
