H2SO4 is better known as sulfuric acid. Other known names for this chemical are oil of vitriol, hydrogen sulfate or battery acid. It is a clear liquid that is thick and odorless.

The chemical has quite a reputation. In its concentrated form, it is known to be very dangerous as it could have a violent reaction when mixed with aqueous solutions and certain bases. Sulfuric acid can also release poisonous gases. It produces hydrogen when used with light metals and it can produce sulfur oxides when heated. It should also not be used with organics (oximes, picrates, etc.) and oxidizing agents (nitrates, bromine, etc.) as the mixture could have some undesirable reactions.

Amidst all of the dangers that the chemical is potential to cause, sulphuric acid is very useful in certain industries. Some of the things that we usually encounter everyday are produced through the use of the chemical. In order to handle sulfuric acid properly, you need to know how humans can get exposed to the chemical. There are three exposure routes that sulfuric acid can become potentially dangerous. One is through inhalation. Another is ingestion. The last is through eye or skin contact. You also need to know that the chemical can only become dangerous in certain concentration. The chemical's effects are still mild if the patient is exposed to less than 2.0 mg concentration. Some irritation will be felt in the affected areas, depending on the entry route of the acid. When exposed to a concentration of 2.0-5.0 mg, the patient will experience severe irritation in the affected area coupled with some burning sensation and difficulty in breathing. 5.0 mg concentration and up could cause pulmonary edema to the patient which can be felt hours after the exposure. The patient should be carefully monitored. A 15 mg concentration is what you should be afraid of because this concentration is already an immediate hazard to the patient's health.

You will be able to avoid all of these problems if you know the proper handling and storage of sulphuric acid. The cardinal rule in handling the chemical would be to keep it away from reducing substances, strong oxidants, metals, strong bases and combustible substances. Make sure that you do not add water with the acid. If you need to, make sure that you do the mixing in glass since water and sulfuric acid generate heat and could easily melt plastics. Also, make sure that you store the acid in a suitable storage area and container. The place should be dry, well-ventilated and cool. Never place the acid in areas that can be reached by sunlight and any combustibles. The floor should also be acid resistant in case spillage happens.
