In the industries different equipments are used and these equipments exhausts fume that is containing different harmful elements. To make a work friendly environment for the employees it is become a must to control the fume of industrial environment. Even the governments are enforcing laws for controlling fume. As the need to improve air quality by reducing fume becomes more apparent and the industries are now searching for systems that can control fume and help them to obey the laws and also enhance their reputation by ensuring an employee working environment.

The ultimate goal of fume control is separating the worker from the contaminant. The traditional approach is to exhaust dusty air outside the industry. This is the simplest method, but it can be inefficient, expensive in colder climates and harmful for environment.

A good fume control system must ensure the following--

Identify the problem
Protect the worker
Maintain the quality of the work
Minimize the environmental impact
Remain cost effective

For controlling fume the first task is minimizing the fume by,

Eliminating ...
... fume-generating processes
Re-engineering the workplace to minimize and isolate fume generation
Changing to lower fume alternatives
Capturing fume at source before it reaches the worker
Providing personal protective equipment at the worker
Cleaning the air to reduce ambient hazards
Exchanging stale air with fresh

Capture Fume at Source

After minimizing the fume it is better to capture them in the source for controlling them. Never blow the fume away as it will affect the larger work environment. Using a vacuum capturing process is the best way. It takes the fume away from the worker. A well-placed source capture arms can capture the entire fume that is generated. Arms capture smoke from a defined area, and then easily move to cover other areas. Set a capturing arm in front of every machine and it will work effectively.

Filtered General Ventilation System

An efficient filtered general ventilation system can maintain a clean and safe work area by keeping the concentration of fume in air. Most of the industries have such a system but it is Important to improve the system for the efficiency of the system. Here some tips for it--

Make the application simple. The simpler the system is to use the easier it is to enforce. The fewer choices the worker has to make, the less chance they will forget or refuse.
When isolation and capture at source is not practical use respirators to protect the worker.
Maintain an effective filter as a good filtration system will capture the fume and dust, returning clean air typically capturing greater than 99 per cent of the contaminants.
Automate the capture and filtration system. Filtration can make up the largest cost of a fume capture system, but there are ways to minimize costs, while maintaining efficiencies.
Minimize noise by fan silencers and smart controls. They reduce noise and power consumption, while increasing filter life and efficiency.
Bring in the fresh air. Filtration can eliminate the dust and particulate, but does nothing about industrial gas buildup and oxygen depletion. Air exchange remains very important.
