Electrical connectors, when used in outdoor purpose don't last for long & erode much faster. Their erosion may affect the electrical devices that are joined through it & make them fail completely with a permanent block in their electricity circuits. Such situation arises mainly due to the dirt that gets deposited on the female & males parts of electrical connectors. Proper cleaning methods can be followed to remove dirt from them & help the electrical connectors function smoothly without getting eroded.

Male Connectors Cleaning Tips
Make a practice to cease power supply to both sections of all electrical connectors before making an attempt to clean it.
Take a clean rag & wipe up any dirt or debris present on the electrical connectors with it. Then pull apart the connector to make the male probes & the female sockets clearly visible. Watch the condition of the male connectors & check for the presence of whitish or green powder which will definitely lead to corrosion. It is time to replace the entire plus assembly in case the metal appears broken & rusted.
You can ...
... take a fine sandpaper of approximately two inches long & rub the metal pins of electrical connectors with it to remove its discoloration & bring back to its shining phase.
Apply liquids like vinegar or electrical contact cleaner which you can quick spray on the metal pins & brush them with the use of a toothbrush.
The contact lubricant can be sprayed on the male electrical connectors as a coating to increase conductivity & avoid corrosion.
Female Connectors Cleaning Tips
Use either vinegar or contact cleaner & spray them into the female sockets.
You can put a small diameter steel brush in the female socket & start rotating it in a clockwise direction until all dirt gets wrapped in it & then pull it out from the socket.
To speed up your cleaning process, the sockets need to be kept wet with either vinegar or contact cleaner.
After getting finished with all of the above things the electrical connectors should be reassembled.
