Initially named as the Boston Americans upon the team's founding in 1901, by 1908 the team had taken on the name the Boston Red Sox. One of eight original teams in the American League, this team has a long and varied history.

Early on, the Boston Red Sox were a very strong team in the American league. They won 5 World Series Championships by 1918. But after that last World Series Championship, several decades would pass before the team being a part of the World Series again.
