‘Leave No Trace’ and Responsible Outdoor Adventure
When it comes to planning for an exciting and memorable outdoor adventure, enthusiasts and groups often focus on location and outdoor essentials. For backpackers and beginning mountain climbers, the main considerations focus on safety and climbing essentials including boots, helmet, carabineers, ropes and harnesses. And for enthusiasts and experienced trekkers, attention is on details and improved specifications. All these make an exciting ( and memorable ) outdoor adventure, but keep in mind that exploring the outdoors through rappelling, mountain climbing or camping comes with its own set of responsibilities. While it’s expected that you’ll maximize your time outdoors, it’s expected that you also respect, maintain and leave the area in exactly the same condition.
An act to preserve and maintain
Balance and harmony are requirements when it comes to conservation efforts. And this is something that backpackers and outdoor sports enthusiasts often fails to do. As increasing number of expeditions and outdoor explorations are made, numerous unwanted ...
... ‘footprints’ and evidences of damage are left on areas of explorations and discovery. The evidences of damage come in many forms, from trampled and destroyed vegetation, polluted water, eroded soil to mountain slopes littered with debris. This has been the growing problem in top trekking and mountain climbing destinations including the Sagarmatha National Park, in Nepal. According to authorities, the increase in the number of adventure-seekers in the area has brought a considerable amount of thrash including climbing gears, plastic bottles and cans and food wrappers. These evidences aren't just eyesores; these can affect the vegetation and can even destroy the landmarks that future generation of climbers and trekkers can enjoy.
This principle may seem like a project that’s difficult to implement, it should be remembered that there are pro-active ways of implementing the philosophy with climbing enthusiasts and trekkers taking an active role. Conservation efforts always start with the direct stakeholders- the outdoor adventure enthusiasts. This can be done by integrating careful planning, responsible waste disposal, responsible use of the environment, respecting biodiversity and leaving whatever is discovered.
Government agencies and organizations also have roles to play when it comes to preservation and conservation, through guidelines. But when these guidelines are all over the place and sites are overly managed, popular trekking and climbing locations may lose its sense of uniqueness and wilderness. In short, outdoor adventure lovers and enthusiasts should take the lead after all, they are the ones who’ll enjoy and explore these areas.
