New London-Based Amazon HQ To see R&D Staff Levels Double
In July of this year online retail giant Amazon, despite fears that the Brexit vote would see the move put on hold, finally started the process of moving staff to their new premises on the border of Shoreditch and the City of London.
The 15-storey, 600,000 sq ft office building just north of Liverpool street train station can accommodate up to 5,000 people, which could see research and development staff levels double in the city, where Amazon Prime is the primary focus.
Despite some doubt that the move would go ahead following the Brexit vote, with many commentators touting a change of destination that could see Paris or Berlin benefit from the move, Amazon has made it clear that their intentions as far as expansion of operations in the UK, and most notably London, have not changed. This move means Amazon will join Facebook in strengthening their ties to the UK post-Brexit, after the social media giants signed up for a 15-year lease on a 227,324 sq ft property in the Rathbone Square development in Fitzrovia, near Tottenham Court Road.
Since ...
... 2010 Amazon have invested around £6.5 billion in its UK operation, and fully intends to raise its number of full-time employees to just shy of 25,000, with thousands of those jobs likely to be created in the City of London.
It had been claimed that initially the online retail leader only intended to take 430,000 sq ft of the new Principal Place building, but the choice to increase their presence in the area can only be considered a positive for the London tech industry.
The new offices, which have been described by Amazon as “light & airy”, come with a whole host of features as you would expect from a company of Amazon’s stature.
Various cafes and restaurants, as well as kitchen facilities, will keep the growing workforce fed throughout their working day, and two outdoor spaces with seating and greenery will provide a relaxing area to sit and enjoy a coffee during breaks. There are also roof terrace areas where meetings can take place among some of the most scenic views available of the City of London.
With news breaking this month that Camden Council has given planning permission the go-ahead for Google to begin work on their new £600 million King’s Cross headquarters, which has been shortlisted for the World Interior of The Year award of 2017, it seems that the doom & gloom that was predicted following the Brexit vote hasn’t come to pass. At least, not yet.
It would appear that the response to the EU situation that we’ve seen from other industries, most notably the financial sector, isn’t being mirrored by their tech counterparts.
The signs look good for the tech industry in the UK, and London in particular, with high levels of investment, job creation and some of the world’s biggest companies looking to make our city their home for the foreseeable future.
When it comes to IT support services and client-oriented solutions, HTL is leading the pack. London-based, we’re excited to be part of the bright future that the city has.
