CNN’s chief medial correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta who has earlier expressed his views against marijuana reversed his opinion after further studies on the weed. He now believes that marijuana must be made legal for medical purposes even though its use for adult recreation stays controversial.

Some of the advocates of cannabis legalization may have overstated the benefits of this herb but the fact that it does have some medicinal properties cannot be denied. With legalization the studies to justify therapeutic uses can be facilitated further. According to a report on Business Insider website only 6% of the studies on cannabis have successfully analyzed its medicinal characteristics.

According to researchers there are at least 2 known active components in the weed that give it the medical value. These are in the form of cannabidiol or CBD that affects the brain sans a high and tetrahydrocannabinol or THC that triggers the pain relieving action.
The weed is said to be useful in the treatment of the following ailments:

Such effects of the weed can slow down the growth of the disease and prevent blindness. A marijuana portable vaporizer may be used to effectively inhale the medicinal extracts of the herb.

Epileptic Seizure – As per another study conducted in 2003, marijuana can help in preventing epileptic seizures. Some cannabinoids-like ingredients in the weed and THC acted to control seizures by binding to brain cells that regulate excitability and manage relaxation. The inferences drawn in this study were also published in the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics.

Spread of cancer – Cannabinoids may help in preventing the growth and spread of cancerous cells. This was found in a research reported by California Pacific Medical Center in 2007. These elements have the propensity to turn off a gene known as Id-1. The studies by these researchers involved breast cancer cells with high expression levels of Id-1. These were treated with cannabidiol. The cells did show lower Id-1 expression after this treatment and were less aggressive spreaders. Dr. Sanjay Gupta has also stated a few studies in Spain, Israel and USA that threw light upon the ability of compounds in marijuana to kill cancer cells.

Alzheimer's disease – Kim Janda of the Scripps Research Institute conducted a study which talked about the ability of cannabis to slow down the development of Alzheimer's disease. Conducted in the year 2006 and published in the journal called Molecular Pharmaceutics, the research confirmed that THC chemical in cannabis reduces the rate of formation of amyloidal plaques. These plaques are responsible for killing the brain cells and develop Alzheimer’s. THC chemical blocks the enzyme in the brain that creates them.
