Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a sophisticated set of related processes that require significant levels of expertise and commitment to be successful. While many of the tools needed for quality SEO results can be easily found online, many of them free, constant dedication and continuing education are essential to generate top search engine results. In theory, you could do this yourself; in practicality you probably can’t.

It’s important that any website be built correctly from the ground up, so if you intend on marketing your site online, make sure that you do the right things from the beginning.

1. Keyword Research and Prioritization †the first and most fundamental step of any SEO strategy is identifying all of the keywords that are relevant to the site, the keyword search volume for each keyword, the relative competitiveness of each keyword. No one can or should target all of the keywords at once; this is impractical if not impossible. This is why it is important to target those keywords based on the priority you establish guided by the results of the keyword ...
... research itself. Think about it; simply, keywords are the words searchers use when utilizing one of the many search engines. Searchers end up on page 1 using the keywords and the Search Engines provide the results on this page that are the most relevant based on the keyword. So knowing which ones are being searched, in what volume, etc is central to knowing what your SEO activities are all about
2. Keyword Optimization †this step means using the keywords you selected in step one to your greatest advantage. It isn’t enough to simply ‘freckle’ your content with keywords. Instead, use them in the places search engine spiders are most likely to look for them. These include your title, headers, anchor text and Meta tags. Be sure to avoid ‘word stuffing’ †or jamming your text full of keywords. Spiders don’t like this. Instead aim for a keyword density of 3 †4%. Most importantly, write for human beings and not for the spiders and just make it relevant, intelligent and worth reading. The keyword density will take care of itself.
3. Treat Google Like Your Best Friend †Google will actually help you improve your rankings †if you do everything they ask you to do. Carefully read their rules and regulations and do each step they require (site maps and robots.txt files are examples). It will improve your rankings with Google and other search engines. Use the Google Webmaster Tools. Learn all that Google has to offer and follow their guidelines; precisely!
4. Off-Page Optimization †It is not enough to design a great looking website and still not enough to do all of the right things for SEO onsite or on-page. If you have perfect on-site SEO, it is rare that you will rank highly on the strength of this alone. Google uses Backlinks (inbound links), both the quantity and the quality of Backlinks to separate the men from the boys when ranking sites for any keyword. Off-Page Optimization really boils down to the development and growth of highly relevant, naturally occurring backlinks. These are the best Backlinks because they are the ones that score the most points with the search engines. The best and most essential methodology in growing Backlinks is through the syndication of unique, highly relevant content; content should be mostly textual as in articles, blog posts and press releases. However, video, podcasts, images can also be syndicated through relevant sites that are oriented to this type of content.
5. Keep It Fresh †Spiders like fresh content that is updated on a regular basis, so put the time in and keep your site fresh. Create new content, contribute to forums or start a blog †All are great ways to keep your content fresh and searchable.
