How Can Tooth Decay And Gum Disease Be Prevented?

Tooth decay and gum disease are two of the most common dental diseases among children and adults alike. Interestingly, they are also two of the most preventable diseases. Tooth decay happens when the tooth enamel of eroded, leading to holes in the teeth called cavities. If these are left untreated, the cavities will worsen and affect the whole tooth. In no time, the infection will spread to the gums, roots and jawbone. Both of these dental issues can lead to tooth loss and even bone loss when it is not addressed. Fortunately, you can prevent these by following these simple steps.
1. Brush your teeth twice daily. This is one of the easiest steps to prevention that you should never overlook. Brush your teeth in the morning and then at night to help remove plaque and bacteria buildup that can lead tooth decay and gum disease.
2. Take care of your tongue. When it comes to oral hygiene, make sure that you include your tongue. Your tongue harbors bacterial as well. Use your toothbrush or a special tongue scraper to give you a good cleaning.
3. Floss daily. Brushing is not complete without flossing. Flossing allows ...
... you to reach some small crevices in your teeth that your toothbrush cannot. It is mostly in these areas where plaque starts to build up, particularly in the areas between the teeth and around the gum line.
4. Use mouthwash. Give yourself an added boost to your oral hygiene routine by swishing with mouthwash as needed. If possible, opt for a mouthwash that has anti-bacterial properties.
5. Skip sugary food. Foods high in sugar and starch can cause a reaction in your mouth that can lead to the formation of cavities. Sugar reactions with the bacteria present in your saliva, forming an acid that will damage the outer protective layer of your teeth called enamel.
6. Use fluoride toothpaste. Fluoride is very effective in strengthening your teeth enamel so it is less susceptible to tooth decay.
7. Pay attention to your mouth. If you find a spot of blood when you brush or when you see that your gums look inflamed, consult your dentist as soon as you can. Never ignore any aches as this can lead to serious health issues when left untreated.
Here’s one final tip: visit your dentist regularly. Schedule an appointment with your dentist for routine check-ups and cleaning at least twice a year. Your dentist can spot potential problems because they actually show symptoms and get them treated immediately. Dental cleaning is also effective in removing tartar build up, which cannot be removed with regular brushing at home. Use this time to educate yourself about dental hygiene by asking them questions.
