Depression affects tens of millions of people around the world and is one of the most common mental disorders in the U.S. If you’ve been trying to get rid of anxiety, depression or insomnia – aromatherapy may be the quick fix. There are a number of ways to enjoy aromatherapy at home. Below are some of our favorite ways to let the healing power of essential oils move us.

Diffusion

A machine called a diffuser spreads the scent of essential oils throughout a room, or your entire home. Many stores also sell mini diffusers that you can pack with you on the go, wherever you may be.

Sprays

Quickly add the scent of your essential oils to a spray bottle; either premixed or make your own by mixing essential oils and water. Use as a room spray, or spray on yourself for a refreshing mist.

Baths

Take a nice and relaxing bath with scented oils to help turn your bath, or shower into a relaxing experience.

Beauty products

Drop aromatherapy into soaps, lotions and hair products to help carry the essential oil scent with you, wherever you go. Skip the perfume, use essential oils!

Outside of the home, many therapeutic and medical professionals use the power of essential oils to health and enhance the body’s healing powers.

Going for a massage? Combine aromatherapy to your massage oil and pack it with you to bring to your next massage appointment. However, it’s important not to apply the oils directly on the skin, make sure to mix them with massage oil.

Aromatherapy is often used in different types of mental health practices as well. Psychotherapists use essential oils in pairing to relaxation training, such as diaphragmatic breathing, mindfulness practice and biofeedback. Just the scent alone may be enough to elicit the relaxation response. In cognitive behavioral therapy, or what therapists also refer to as “associative learning” or “higher-order conditioning,” the scent is meant to trigger the same response as meditation, breathing, and biofeedback.

If you’ve given aromatherapy a try at home and you’re still suffering from symptoms such as panic attacks, depression, and insomnia, to name a few, it is important to remember that mental health professionals are close by and eager to help you get the treatment you need. You are not alone. Find a doctor nearby at a time that’s convenient for you at UMA Health.
