Breaking The Australian Misconception
Yearly, there are countless of people lining up the embassies to get their Australia visas. However, it is interesting to note that not all of them really know the country that well. In fact some mighty actually have misconceptions about Australia. These range from the benign misunderstanding to those that actually have negative effects on the country's image.
One of the most common of these beliefs is the image of the rugged Australian out backer. This was popularized by the 80's comedy film Crocodile Dundee and its sequels. However, contrary to the picture shown in the movies, not all Australians live a rugged life.
In fact, it is interesting to note that, even with the large size of the outback, only one percent of the entire Australian population actually live there. Most of the people actually live in the city, with a third living the major cities of Sydney and Melbourne. Also, Australians are highly urbanized, even many of the Aboriginal natives are fast becoming urban dwellers.
Another image that many Westerners have of Australia is that the people live in idyllic farms and tend sheep. This is actually ...
... related to the first one cited above. However, though agriculture is indeed a large part of the Australian economy, not all of Aussies actually work in the farms, or have one for that matter. In fact, the largest section of Australia's earnings comes from the services sector, which is mostly based in the cities.
Australians are also often perceived by many people as being blondes with tanned skin. This actually masks the cultural diversity that the country has. The truth is, Australia actually has a a large population of Chinese, Vietnamese and other Asians, as well as other nationalities. This goes to show that foreigner encounters in the street will likely not always conform to that idea.
One particularly interesting misconception about Australians that some people have, especially those coming from the Western countries, is that they don't speak English. Though this one seems a bit silly, this actually can cause a problem with communicating with Australians. The truth is, English is the language of the country. It is only because of the way that many Australians use the language that make it seem that they are speaking an entirely different tongue.
For those going into the country, one good way to know more about Australia and avoid these misconceptions is by going to the orientation session offered by the embassy. This is given by the embassy to all those getting visas. Here, you will be able to learn not only the basic facts about the country, but also the Australian culture.
