The great playwright Shakespeare wrote this play in 1601-1602. Hamlet, the prince of Denmark is the central character of the play. The play is set in Denmark. Revenge is the main motive of the plot. The Prince of Denmark returns from studies to find his father, the King of Denmark dead and his mother, Gertrude married to his uncle, Claudius, the present king. Some sentinels of the Elsinore Castle and the prince's friend, Horatio tell him that they have seen his father's ghost. The prince meets his father's ghost which tells that Claudius killed him. Hamlet decides to avenge his father's death. This is the vital point of the play as the prince of Denmark reaches a state of grief and anger. In an insane state the prince attacks Polonius, Claudius' chief counselor accidentally and Claudius sends the prince to England with orders that he be killed secretly. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are the two spies sent with him.

... state of grief due to the murder of her father. On the way to England, sea pirates attack the ship of the prince and he has to return to Denmark once again.

The sub-plot thickens as a dispute between Norway and Denmark heats up. Ophelia's brother Laertes is annoyed with Ophelia lovelorn condition. Claudius forces Laertes into entering a devious plot of engaging in a fight of sword with the prince. The sword will be laced with poison. Claudius also plans of offering poisoned wine to Hamlet if he wins the swordfight. But before the start of the duel, Gertrude gives the news that Ophelia has jumped into a river and has drowned in a state of grief. In this scene, with the prince and Laertes engaged in a duel, the prince of Denmark proclaims that he loves Ophelia and they begin their fight again. Gertrude cheers for her son and drinks from the goblet that contains the poison laced drink meant for Hamlet. Laertes stabs the prince with the sword. The prince too stabs Laertes with the poison-tipped sword and pierces his flesh. As both Hamlet and Laertes are about to die, they reunite. Laertes discloses Claudius' devious plot to the prince. In the last Act, the prince kills Claudius. Prince Fortinbras is announced as the heir to Denmark's throne. The honor of the prince is thus reinstated as the play ends.
