Police Defend Decision; Say Orator Valarmathi A Threat To Peace

In the detention order of M Valarmathi, Salem City police commissioner have said that they have slapped with Goondas Act as the ordinary law would not stop her from doing such protests that would interrupt the public peace.

When Express accessed the Goondas Act order copy that was issued against Valarmathi, the Salem City police have cited total of six cases from 2014 to till date, that were registered against her in various districts.

All the cases that were registered against her were for protesting against Annamalai University, for protesting in support of farmers. Citing all such cases registered against her, police commissioner Sanjay Kumar has said that these cases that were registered against her would not help the police much in stopping her from such continued activities.

“If Valarmathi comes out in bail in the cases in which she is in remand, she will indulge in further activities, which will be prejudicial to the maintenance of public order. I am satisfied that Valarmathi is a ‘Goonda’ and there is a compelling necessity to detain her, in order to prevent her from indulging ...
