Asenapine - Pharmaffiliates
(3aR,12bS)-5-Chloro-2-methyl-2,3,3a,12b-tetrahydro-1H-dibenzo[2,3:6,7]oxepino[4,5-c]pyrrole 2-oxide or (3aR,12bS) Asenapine N-Oxide is one of the metabolites of anti-psychotic drug Asenapine.
A structural analog of antidepressant Mianserin, Asenapine is used for the treatment of Schizophrenia and bipolar disorders. Asenapine is an antagonist at various dopaminergic, serotonergic and alpha adrenergic receptors. It is a novel antipsychotic drug that has received US FDA approval in August 2009. Asenapine is also an antagonist at histamine H1 receptors and hence causes sedation. It was first developed by Schering-Plough and is sold under the trade name of Saphris and Sycrest.
