Rajasthan is the largest State of India and Rajasthan tourism is renown all over the world. It is one of the most visited Indian tourist spot by international tourists. It is part of the “Golden Triangle” for tourists visiting India. A large part of the inhospitable Thar Desert is located in Rajasthan. The capital city of this State is Jaipur.
Rajasthan's natural beauty and rich history makes it a tourist hot spot. Rajasthan tourism is famous for its many palaces, especially those situated in Jaipur and Ajmer-Pushkar. The Udaipur Lake, the desert forts of Jodhpur, Targah fort in Bundi, Bikaner and Jaisalmer are the most visited tourist spots in India. Old and neglected Palaces converted in to Heritage Hotels also attract a number of tourists.
Jaisalmer is famous for its golden fortress, havelis and some of the oldest Jain temples and libraries. The walled township of Jaisalmer and the mud walled fortresses attract a lot of attention. The famed Jaisalmer Fort is situated on the Trikuta Hill and has witnessed many historical battles. The sandstone walls are the main attraction as they turn golden as the sun sets; hence the name Golden Fortress. Inside the fort there is a Palace, a temple and a library. The main havelis in Jaisalmer are Patwon ki Haveli, Salam Singh ki haveli and Haveli Shreenath.
Bikaner is another popular place to visit. The Junagarh fort is very well known. The Laxmi Niwas Palace built in red sandstone is also very beautiful and often visited by tourists in Bikaner. Other places of interest in Bikaner include Lalgarh Palace, Laxmi Nath temple, Mukam temple and Shiv Bari temple among others. The camel festival of Bikaner also attracts a large number of tourists.
Rajasthan tourism claims Udaipur to be the “Venice of India”. The City Palace standing on the banks of Lake Pichola is a popular destination. The terraces of the palace offer beautififul panoramic views of the city. Other palaces worth visiting are Sheesh Mahal, Moti Mahal, Lake Palace and Monsoon Palace among others. The palaces are marvelous and exquisite and also provide a rich historical insight of Rajasthan.
Ranthambore is a small town situated near Sawai Modhupur. It is famous for the Ranthambore national Park which also houses the Ramthambore Fort. Before the independence of India these grounds were used by the Kings as a hunting ground.
Other cities often visited in Rajasthan are Jodhpur, the fortress city with blue houses, Mount Abu, the highest peak in Rajasthan, Pushkar known for its Brahma temples, barner for its paintings. Jaipur, the capital city makes for great shopping and eating. Cuisine and local curios including local jewelry from all over Rajasthan are available in Jaipur. To experience all the colors and beauty that Rajasthan has to offer under one roof, one can visit the Government initiative Chowkidhani.
