Situated in the state of Madhya Pradesh Gwalior is a city that is famous as a tourist destination. Steeped in rich history, culture and tradition, the city was founded by the king Suraj sen of the Kachwaha clan. With numerous forts, palaces and sacred temples dotting the city's landscape, Gwalior was a prominent historical city even in the ancient times. The city lies in the Gird region of the state and was formerly the princely state of Madhya Pradesh. According to many legends, the city was named a saint Gwalipa who is believed to have cured king Suraj Sen of leprosy. The ancient city of Gwalior has been ruled by various prominent dynasties and rulers such as Tomaras, Mughals, Marathas, Scindias, Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi and Tatya Tope before finally falling under the rule of the British. From as early as the 8th century, the city has been a favourite among the many dynasties and even finds mention in ancient Hindu epics where it is referred to as Gopalkash. According to archaeologists, the city of Gwalior dates back to middle stone and iron ages and since as early as the pre-medieval ages, the region was a prominent Jain centre. Situated at the foothills of a sandstone hillock, Jodhpur is a much sought after tourist destination in the state of Rajasthan. Visited by tourists from all over the country and even the world, Jodhpur has a range of tourist attractions to entice tourists.
