Bangalore or Bengaluru, as it is known today, is the capital city of the southern state of Karnataka in India. Renowned as the Silicon Valley of India, Bangalore is located on the Deccan Plateau, in the southeastern part of Karnataka. Bangalore was known as the Garden City of India from the 1950s owing to the beautiful gardens that dotted the city. But at present, this metropolis is more or less known for its numerous IT based companies and tech parks. As Bangalore enjoys a pleasant climate throughout the year, many people settled here, thereby earning it another sobriquet - the Pensioner's Paradise. Kodaikanal is a famous hill station located in the Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu. Kodaikanal means 'The Gift of the Forest' in the local dialect Tamil. Kodaikanal is also called the ‘Princess of Hill Stations' as it was a popular summer retreat right from the days of the British. Kodaikanal was established as a shelter from the heat and diseases of the plains by the British in the year 1845. Presently, Kodaikanal thrives on the tourism industry and offers a plethora of attractions which include waterfalls, valleys, view points, meadows, caves and unspoiled natural beauty. Travelling from Bangalore to Kodaikanal is moderately simple. Though both the cities aren't directly connected by air transport, proximity of Kodaikanal to Madurai (126 km) and Coimbatore (180km) airports makes the travel easy. There are direct flights from Bangalore to Coimbatore and Bangalore to Madurai. Each of these airports offers passenger amenities like restaurants and pre-paid taxi service. Taxis to Kodaikanal charge upwards of INR 4,000. Travel time from Coimbatore to Kodaikanal by cab is around five hrs amidst picturesque settings. Time taken to achieve Kodaikanal from Madurai by automotive is around 3 and half hours. Rail connectivity from Bangalore to Kodaikanal is also good. Two trains, Nagarcoil Express and Tuticorn Express connect Bangalore to Kodaikanal (Kodai Road station). The train takes approximately ten hours time to arrive from Bangalore to Kodaikanal. Advance booking of train tickets is suggested if travelling with elders and youngsters, particularly during the peak seasons – which are from April to June and September to October. Traveling from Bangalore to Kodaikanal by road is less complicated as there are several buses that ply from Bangalore. Private agencies and government agencies, both run different types of buses like airbus, AC luxury seater, AC sleeper, Semi sleeper, 2 X 2 coaches. They charge around INR 340 to INR 514, according to the facilities provided. Hiring taxi is another option to travel from Bangalore to Kodaikanal. The beautiful hill station of Ooty or Ootacamund is one of the most popular hill stations in India and often visited by a number of tourists from Bangalore for whom it is the ideal weekend destination. Ooty is perched at an altitude of 2286 m nestled amidst the beautiful Nilgiri Hills. Ooty is fringed by mighty mountains peaks and is also the site of the highest point in Southern India, the Doddabetta Peak. This mountain peak is a favourite adventure site for many adventure seekers who come from Bangalore to Ooty to indulge in some adventure tourism. The landscape of Ooty is beautified by its carpet of plush green tea plantations, cascading waterfalls and a wide variety of flora. Apart from tea plantations, Ooty is also famous for its spice gardens which grow a variety of spices. The region is also famous for its oil extraction from eucalyptus tree, plants like lemongrass and geranium. One of the highlights of Ooty, apart from its spectacular scenery is the Toy Train ride along a very scenic route. This narrow gauge train traverses through a 46 km long route climbing up and down several hills and offers tourists a breathtaking view from every angle of the entire journey. The journey commences at a small station near Mettupalayam called Kallar and takes quite a long time to reach its destination since the steam engine needs to be frequently replenished with water. Among the many popular tourist attractions in Ooty, most noted ones are Ooty Lake, Deer Park, Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary, the Rose Garden, Ooty Botanical Garden and the Stone House. The Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary, a national park and tiger reserve also draws a large number of tourists to it. The city of Bangalore is situated around 267 km from Ooty by road. a well-laid network of roads and rails, connect the city of Bangalore to Ooty. There is no direct train to Ooty, however those wishing to traverse the distance by road can do so by taking a train from Bangalore to Mettupalayam and then from there Ooty is a toy train ride away. Ooty does not have an airport of its own and the closest airport is in Coimbatore. Travelling to Ooty via flight is not a recommended way to travel as it is not only uneconomical but is also quite a time consuming option. a cab ride from Coimbatore airport to Ooty would set you back by around INR 2500. An excellent mode of transport is by the state run KSRTC bus, which are available in plenty. A number of private buses also operate on this route. Mumbai, the capital city of Maharashtra, and Kolkata, the capital city of West Bengal are two main cities in India. Kolkata is at a distance of about 1970 km away from Mumbai. Kolkata is well-connected to Mumbai through all modes of transportation, air, rail and road. Travel by road is not recommended to reach Kolkata from Mumbai since the distance can only be covered within 24 hours even by using the train services available. There is less number of private vehicles available to travel from Mumbai to Kolkata since the trip by road can be troublesome. Bus services by the government and private agencies to travel from Mumbai to Kolkata are less in number due to security reasons. For those travelers who are adventurous and want to drive from Mumbai to Kolkata, the travel can take at least three days to reach Kolkata from Mumbai. Though the roads that lead to Kolkata from Mumbai are fine, there can be problems due to traffic congestions. The two main halts during the road journey should be Nagpur on day 1 and Sambalpur on day 2. In cross contradiction to the road journey, there are plenty of flight services from Mumbai to Kolkata that will only take a travel time of about 3 hours. This mode though expensive, is the best way to reach Kolkata from Mumbai. Direct flights are available from Mumbai to Kolkata that are comfortable and suited for the elderly and families with kids. Kolkata airport is situated at a distance of about 14 km away from the city center to where a number of taxis and buses are available. Travel from Mumbai to Kolkata by train which will at least take 24 hours of travel time is considered to be the most economical and comfortable way to travel from Mumbai to Kolkata. Though there are a number of trains running between the railway stations, the best train is the HWH Duronto that provides services only on Tuesdays and Saturdays. This train does not stop in any stations between Mumbai and Kolkata. Kolkata Howrah Junction railway station is located at a distance of about 2 km away from the city center. A lot of taxis, rickshaws and buses are available from the Kolkata Howrah Junction railway station to the city center. CSTM Howrah Spl, Kolkata Mail, Howrah Mail, Gitanjali Express and Howrah Super Express are the names of a few trains that provide service from Mumbai to Kolkata from the Mumbai CST railway station on selected days. Train journey from Mumbai to Kolkata can cost 1775 rupees per traveler in an A/C three tier coach.
